TYLEUM GROUP | Thought Leadership: National Boss's Day (2026 Version)
The Ledger of Borrowed Metal

An empty executive chair, a tarnished crown, and the unyielding weight of the ledger. On National Boss’s Day, we deconstruct the unearned illusions of positional authority and examine the heavy toll of leadership without proximity, courage, or grace. True authority is not granted by a title or a seat in a corner office—it is earned, every day, through the service and trust of the people who actually build the enterprise and choose to follow your lead.
The driving, solemn cadence of Siren Void’s "Borrowed Metal"—built around trochaic and iambic tetrameter with stark, declarative lines—serves as a natural frame for the corporate tyranny, untethered authority, and systemic complicity through which many of us have spent our careers.
This poem, mapped to that exact structural rhythm and progression, recasts those themes into the reality of a workplace machine void of humanity and bereft of decency.
For over four decades, I have watched organizations buckle under three distinct executive pathologies:
· the untamed passions of gifted men,
· the unteachable temperament of privileged men, and
· the wanton power of weak men.
When these dysfunctions take the helm, they systemically dismantle a company from the inside out. They inexorably lead to the persecution of people by proxy, productivity by process, and profit by policy. This poem is a reflection on the unearned authority that drives those failures—and a declaration of the courage required to refuse them.

The Ledger of Borrowed Metal
We inherited the titles
And mistook their rank for leadership
Raised our monuments to profit
In a polished, hollow place
Every value was a slogan
Every handshake hid a blade
We called subservience virtue
While the quiet traps were laid
The bosses spoke of loyalty
From chairs untouched by consequence
They drew the metrics carefully
Then blamed the field for their expense
The ledger tracks the borrowed time
The human cost beneath the floor
There is no king behind that desk
No genius in the velvet door
The title’s only borrowed metal
The kingdom ends where fear begins
Let every title meet the weather
Let every ego meet the dust
An enterprise of broken backs
Will buckle underneath our weight of trust
I saw an elder in the hallway
Packing decades in a cardboard box
No HR speech from smiling mouths
Could make amends for severed locks
Somewhere, a board approved the budget
Somewhere, a bonus check was cleared
Somewhere, a signature was drafted
To break the very thing we reared
A culture is no sacred river
It is a room with mirrored glass
We flatter men who hoard the power
Then act surprised when good men pass
The future of work doesn’t need our silence
It needs the courage to refuse
Let every title meet the weather
Let every ego meet the dust
An enterprise of broken backs
Will buckle underneath our trust
Do not tell me peace is weakness
When you rule by covert fright
Do not preach of shared commitment
When you bleed us overnight
Do not call the silence culture
Do not call the fortress sound
Do not praise the ones who severed truth
And ask the bruised to hang around
We are not born to serve the symbols
That forget the lives they steer
No firm is saved by endless pleasing
No truth is honored by our fear
If there must be something sacred
Let it be the craftsman’s pride
The spine that shoulders honest weight
The voice that will not run and hide
If there must be independence
Let it start behind the eyes
The moment one compliant soul
Discards the comfort of their lies
There is no king behind that desk
No chosen heir, no holy test
The title’s only borrowed metal
The kingdom ends where truth begins
No king
No master
No honor in organization
Only the living organisms
And the ground
We choose to reclaim
